I'm Officially a Fables Fan!

March of the Wooden Soldiers is definitely my favorite volume so far. I liked this series, which started out kind of slow, but has grown into one of best I've read in awhile. I've been meaning to read these for so long. But honestly, I couldn't see how fairy tale characters brought into modern times could be done without being cheesy or cornball. Bill Willingham has done it! The characterizations are very well done. Most of the characters are portrayed much differently than in classic fairy tales or Disney versions. Everything about Fables feels very fresh and original.
I love how pragmatic Snow White is, and her relationship with Bigby Wolf is one of the highlights of the series for me. As the story unfolds, new facets of each character are shown and just when you think someone is irredeemable, they show a new side of themselves. I care about these characters and can't wait to see what happens to them.
If you're considering reading Fables, I highly recommend that you give it until this volume before you decide whether you're in for the long haul. I'm not even a big fan of fairy tale re-tellings, but I'm loving this.
